January 3, See His Word
“Open my eyes that I may see the wondrous things in Your law.” Psalm 119:18
A significant step toward clearer spiritual vision involves time in God’s Word. In Psalm 119:18, the psalmist petitioned that God would open his eyes so that he could see the wondrous things in God’s Word.
Notice that the Psalmist requested to see God’s Word. Often we are encouraged to hear the Word of God. But, to see God’s Word? Why the sense of sight? This reference is made simply because the Psalmist recognized in God’s Word wondrous things to behold. This placed emphasis upon the beauty of God’s Word, and the reader as the one observing such beauty. What are these wondrous things to behold?
Spurgeon writes of this verse, “The Psalmist felt that God had laid up great bounties (blessings or treasures) in His Word . . . to perceive, appreciate, and enjoy . . . we need not that God would give us more benefits, but rather the ability to see what He has already given.”
When you approach God’s Word, do you simply see a text to read, or treasures of God’s heart to discover? Does God’s Word seem antiquated, or do you realize that His Word is life – meaning a powerfully practical guide for your day in and day out living? Do you see God’s truths as wondrous for life, leading you closer to His heart?
When Paul prayed for the Christians of the first century to have the eyes of their heart opened (Ephesians 1:18), he was not praying for some extraordinary revelation outside of their experience with God. Paul essentially prayed that the very truth they had received in their lives (having been personally enlightened by the light of Christ through salvation) would become clearer and more deeply embraced as they moved forward in their life of faith. This is only possible as we spend time in God’s Word to discover the treasures and benefits God has given us in Jesus.
So today, make your daily petition like that of the Psalmist. Begin praying that God will open your spiritual eyes to see the incredible treasures of truth He has for you.
Through time in God’s Word, your understanding of who God is will deepen. Your relationship with Jesus will become more vivid. The eyes of your heart will open wider. So, spend time in God’s Word and feed upon the His truth that is your life.
Blessings.
